Can I install plumbing into my log cabin

There are dozens of different uses for a log cabin, but some of the most popular (think garden guest room, beauty treatment room, hot tub space and art studio) require which is something we usually take for granted in our homes – running water. Thankfully you can install plumbing into your log cabin, and best of all, it is relatively straightforward to do!

Assuming that you are having electricity in your cabin too, both your plumbing and power services can be laid using the same trench, and this is usually done at the ground working stage, i.e. before your cabin is actually built.

Log Cabin On A Budget

The pipes that carry your water will need to be lain below the frost line and where they run above ground, insulated from the cold. You will need one pipe to carry clean water to your cabin, and one pipe to take the waste water away. If your log cabin is located below the level of any existing drains, you will need to install a basic domestic pumping station, which will pump the waste to your sewer. This will require electricity to operate, and we recommend that you speak to a qualified electrician to get advice on the placement of any electricity cables with regard to proximity to water pipes. Many people also consider alternative, eco-friendly sources of water for their cabin, for example collecting rainwater to feed a toilet flush.

Please be aware that if you intend your log cabin to be fit for a permanent dwelling, then you will need to ensure it complies with building services regulations. To find out more about these rules, check out Planning Portal, the government’s web-based guide.
